The Second Street Transformation project is a multi-phase renovation and upgrade of an existing, aged transportation corridor through downtown Macon. The project is based on the National Complete Streets Coalition’s concept of safe, comfortable, and convenient access to community destinations and public places–whether walking, driving, bicycling, or taking public transportation. The Complete Streets concept integrates people and place in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of our transportation networks.
The first phase of the project completely transformed one city block of the Second Street Corridor into a complete street, dubbed “The Vision Block” as an example of the concept for the remainder of the corridor. The project is on-going with upcoming phases tying the Mercer University campus to the downtown area and the Centre plex Convention Center. This will include two bridges over a perpendicular roadway and the Norfolk-Southern Railway “S” Line rail.
