Sheridan Construction successfully completed the renovation of two historical buildings and a two-story new addition for the Otis Redding Center for the Arts in downtown Macon, honoring the legacy of soul music icon Otis Redding. The center now serves as a vibrant hub for aspiring musicians, featuring administrative offices for the Otis Redding Foundation, classrooms, and laboratory spaces to help students hone their musical skills. It also includes a state-of-the-art recording studio, a performance stage, and an amphitheater, enriching Macon’s cultural landscape.
The project involved preserving the structural integrity of the historic buildings while integrating a modern two-story addition. A key challenge was securing the original exterior brick wall between the old and new structure, which required precise design and engineering. The addition was built on the former site of the historic Nu-Way Weiners, a community staple since 1916 that was destroyed by fire. Sheridan Construction took great care to preserve the brick wall connecting the historic buildings and new addition, ensuring it remained safe and secure.
Throughout the project, multiple design changes were requested by the client, and Sheridan worked diligently to accommodate these adjustments while maintaining project timelines and quality. One significant modification involved changing the facade design from a translucent window wall to a glass curtain wall, which enhanced aesthetics but introduced insulation challenges. This required adjustments to the HVAC system and the use of specialized glazing to balance insulation and appearance.
As a high-profile project, the Otis Redding Center attracted public interest, prompting coordinated site visits for promotional and donor events. Sheridan Construction maintained guest safety and project continuity throughout. The team also addressed community challenges by assisting a person experiencing homelessness on-site, working with a local charitable organization to secure housing assistance.
Sheridan implemented rigorous safety measures, clearly marking construction zones with barriers and wayfinding signage to protect citizens and nearby workers, including those at Hotel 45 across the street. Daily toolbox talks, regular inspections, and open communication with the owner and Macon-Bibb officials reinforced a proactive safety culture.
Today, the Otis Redding Center for the Arts stands as a testament to creativity, opportunity, and resilience, offering students a space to explore and showcase their musical talents while honoring the enduring legacy of Otis Redding in the heart of downtown Macon.
