With a fresh, new modern look that reflects the historic nature of the Macon campus, the new Willet Science Center will offer access for students to do more research as well as enjoy the classes and spaces for study groups.

Sheridan Construction was hired to perform a complete interior renovation to Mercer University’s Willet Science Center, which was originally built in 1966 as a 65,000 SF science building. The original scope of work included reconfiguring the interior to house the psychology, computer science, public health, environmental engineering, and athletic training programs, which included new classrooms, student lounge space, accessible laboratories, and computer labs, and ADA-accessible restrooms throughout. A new elevator was also installed to accommodate the growing student population.

Structural issues with the brick and block on the exterior of the building were discovered once the project was started. The scope of work was expanded to include making the exterior structurally sound and reskinning the building with brick and EIFS to match existing new construction on the campus. Additional scope included a full exterior hardscape renovation, three large curtain storefront walls in the existing building, and a renovation of a 200-seat lecture hall on the ground floor.

Sheridan’s work on the Mercer University Willet Science Center Renovation received First Place honors as an Associated General Contractors 2020 Build Georgia Award project.
